Nothing beats the smell of freshly roasted coffee in the morning. As you explore the little roads and lanes throughout the city, at every corner you’ll get a whiff of some rich blend, but not all are of the finest quality, so this is my guide to the best places to get a really good coffee in Brighton.
OUR OWN LITTLE GEM IN KEMPTOWN
Not surprisingly, I am most proud of Cup of Joe in Kemptown, located within the Kemptown trading post. Advertised as a ‘punchy espresso with a thick syrupy texture’ their blend is a mix of Brazil, Honduras, Ethiopian Mocha and Ugandan Robusta, which gives a truly smooth and heavily bodied flavour. With a range of flavourings and options available, and a great chill out environment, this is my number one choice, and only a short walk from the hotel.
CITY CENTRE COFFEE OFFERINGS
In 2017, Small Batch Coffee Roasters won a public vote for the ‘Best Coffee in Brighton’ and there is plenty of reasons why. Ideally located in the most convenient locations throughout the city, from outside the Hove Station, to the prominent corner pitch at Seven Dials, they know where the customers want them to be. By providing a friendly environment from this small family run business, and a range of different blends from all corners of the world, they truly are the top of the blends!
POOCH FRIENDLY COFFEEHOUSE
An honourable mention must go to the Marwood Bar & Coffeehouse. Having won a host of awards, from ‘Most Brighton’ and ‘Best Afternoon Tea & Cake’ venue, to top ten in most ‘Dog Friendly’ and also ‘Top Coffee’, it’s not surprising that this place takes a place in my list. As you’ll know from my previous blogs, I love my dogs, so finding a place to sit and enjoy a good cup of coffee with my pooch is always a plus. They have a great range of snack food options, and a late night cocktail bar option. Located on Ship Street, they are perfectly central to everything.
A LITTLE OFF THE BEATEN TRACK
For those exploring our amazing Sussex countryside, head Alfriston way and you’ll find a little treat in the form of the Apiary Coffee Shop and Garden. 4.5 stars reviewed on TripAdvisor, and mainly known for its Cream Teas, I can assure you their coffees are nothing to be ‘scoffed’ at. With a range of speciality coffees and having sourced some of the best blends, it really is a truly decent cup of coffee, in this very English village setting.
Whatever you choose, Brighton and the surrounding area, definitely know how to please coffee lovers all over.
