06/06/2024 – Richard Thompson

Brighton Dome, Concert Hall. 7pm doors, £51.50, £64.
Back on tour with a full band. The finest rock songwriter after Dylan and the best electric guitarist since Hendrix’ – Los Angeles Times. In 2017, Ivor Novello Award-winning and GRAMMY® Award-nominated legend Richard Thompson gave himself up to the music itself. Picking up a guitar, emotions echoed through his deft fleet-fingered fretwork, poetic songwriting, impassioned picking. Those transmissions comprise his nineteenth solo album, 13 Rivers. ‘There are 13 songs on the record, and each one is like a river,’ Thompson explains. ‘Some flow faster than   others. Some follow a slow and winding current. They all culminate on this one body of work.’In many ways, his career has pointed towards such a statement. Powered by evocative songcraft, jaw-dropping guitar playing, and indefinable spirit, this venerable icon holds a coveted spot on Rolling Stone’s ‘100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time’ and counts a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Americana Music Association in Nashville, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the BBC Awards among his many accolades. 2011 saw Thompson garner an OBE. Moreover, Time touted his anthem, 1952 Vincent Black Lightning, on its ‘100 Greatest Songs Since 1923’ list. Thompson’s influence can’t be overstated. Everybody from Robert Plant, Don Henley, and Elvis Costello to REM, Sleater-Kinney and David Byrne has covered his music. However, 13 Rivers represents another high watermark. ‘The songs are a surprise in a good way,’ Thompson says. ‘They came to me as a surprise in a dark time. They reflected my emotions in an oblique manner that I’ll never truly understand. It’s as if they’d been channeled from somewhere else. You find deeper meaning in the best records as time goes on. The reward comes later.”The finest rock songwriter after Dylan and the best electric guitarist since Hendrix’.

Julian Clary, renowned homosexual and national trinket, is fixing to saddle up and head on out for his 2024 UK tour. ’Yes, it has a Western theme,’ the old buckaroo confirms, sipping Bourbon from a pint tankard. ‘It was only a matter of time before I eased myself into some chaps’ he adds, dabbing his temples with a damp flannel. Julian is sure that the men in the audience will be so eager to join his posse they won’t be able to keep their hands off his Rawhide. The lucky few will play with him on stage in the Hang ’em Low saloon, where Wild Bill Hickok used to meet his special friend, Raving Clarence la Fruit. But life in the Old West was tough. Not all of Julian’s wild bunch will be around to witness the final shoot-out that will result in Julian giving himself selflessly at high noon to the last man standing. Who knows what else he’ll do for a few dollars more? ‘A man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do…’ drawls Julian cryptically before becoming engrossed in his embroidery. ‘Julian Clary unleashes a tsunami of smut’ – The Guardian. ‘The master of camp comedy ….. mixing the expected with the spontaneous, he is pure entertainment.’ – The Times. When it comes to defining the space between classical and electronic music, hardly any other name is mentioned as often as that of Berlin-based pianist, composer and producer Nils Frahm. His unconventional approach to an age-old instrument, played contemplatively and intimately, and his sonic alchemy of ambient textures and atmospheric electronica, has won him many fans around the world. Numerous tours and concerts all over the globe have strengthened his reputation as both an exceptional instrumentalist and a fascinating live musician. His albums have garnered international acclaim from critics and audiences alike, and his live shows are regularly sold out. Following on from his first solo piano works and a collaborative record with cellist Anne Müller, Nils Frahm’s breakthrough album Felt was released in 2011. Two years later and after extensive touring, Frahm returned to critical acclaim with his album Spaces, expressing his love for experimentation and answering his fan’s call for a record that truly reflects what they experience during his live shows. In 2015, Frahm launched Piano Day, an official global body created with his closest friends to celebrate the piano via various innovative, piano-related projects and concerts around the world. That same year, Frahm’s first film score release, Music For The Motion Picture Victoria won the esteemed German Film Prize for Best Soundtrack. Following the release of his album All Melody in 2018, Frahm took his live show around the world on a two-year-long tour, with over 180 sold out performances]. In December 2020, he released the concert film Tripping with Nils Frahm, trying to freeze a moment of this journey and capture his concerts in picture and sound. In September 2022, Nils shared his critically acclaimed, expansive new album Music For Animals, an ambitious and compelling set different to anything Nils has released to date. Returning to the live stage for the first time since 2019, he appeared at the Sydney Opera House in June for the world premiere performance of his current global tour named Music For. Since then, he is back touring all over the world, presenting brand-new music moving between the worlds of experimental, ambient and electronica.
